Naming Ceremonies

Naming ceremonies provide you a personalised, meaningful opportunity to celebrate and welcome your precious new addition to your family. It is a non religious alternative to a formal Christening and is a way to officially name your child in front of your loved ones.

You can have Guideparents (instead of Godparents) or sometimes called ‘Oddparents’! You can personalise your ceremony in any way you wish.

A typical name ceremony would go like this:

• Introductions and welcomes
• A reading or poem
• Storytelling about the child, such as their arrival into the world, their personality and any quirks or interests
• A message about the role and responsibilities of parenting
• The parent’s promises to the child
• Another reading or poem
• Importance of wider family and any specific people in attendance
• Appointment of guideparents
• Guideparents’ promises
• The significance and meaning behind the child’s name
• The naming itself
• Concluding words

The typical cermony lasts approximately 30 minutes but this is entirely up to your choice of ceremony.

Adoption Ceremony

An adoption ceremony is a celebration of a child or children joining the family. It’s a chance to acknowledge and recognise the gift of love and union in front of family and friends. A place to share what a child brings to a family, a chance for new memories to be made together. Adoption ceremonies can be personalised by the lighting of cancles, planting of trees and carefully chosen music or readings. If you have religious beliefs this too is something that can be incorporated with prayers or readings.  It’s all up to you.

Transgender Naming Ceremonies

Changing your name can be one of the most meaningfuyl steps for any trans person in expressing who you are. The changing of a name acknowledges your journey of discovery and symbolises a new beginning. So marking this life moment with a meaningful ceremony is a way of saying to those around you, this is who I am. You can honour your whole self, both past, present and future. It’s also an opportunity to offer thanks for family or friends who have supported and guided you along the path and share your hopes and dreams.
